A peek at our year!
Reading- We use the Journeys Reading Program as a comprehensive K-6 English Language Arts program. Journeys provides instruction for reading literature and informational texts, gaining foundational skills, and developing mastery of speaking, listening, and writing.
Daily Guided Reading is also used as an instructional approach in supporting students that are at a similar point in their reading development. During Guided Reading a teacher coaches a small group of learners as they use problem solving strategies to read increasingly challenging texts.
Writing- Students build their writing fluency through continuous, daily exposure to the writing process during Writer's Workshop. Students use graphic organizers, write rough drafts, edit their work one-on-one with a teacher, "publish" their writing, and share their work with their friends.
Math- The McGraw-Hill My Math program is used to inspire students to embrace the power of math through real-world and hands on learning experiences. The program connects the three components of rigor - conceptual understanding, procedural skill and fluency, and application.
Social Studies- Students study their community and explore different places on the map. They will learn about the characteristics that define urban, suburban, and rural communities. All while embracing and celebrating the different cultures that make up our communities!
Science- We use active inquiry and hands-on experiences to teach students about Properties of Matter, Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems, and the Processes that Shape our Earth.
Religion- Students learn about our parish community, the church, saints, the sacraments, and God's love for us.
